“Sustainable corporate bonds are currently particularly attractively valued.” – Jonne Sandström, portfolio manager, Aktia

Nordic asset managers are considered pioneers in sustainable investing. In an interview with Helge Rehbein from private banking magazine at the Private Banking Congress in Hamburg in 2025, Jonne Sandström, portfolio manager at Aktia Asset Management, explains why ESG bonds currently offer few disadvantages in terms of returns.

Key points of the interview:
1. Attractive environment for sustainable bonds
Sandström believes that now is a favourable time for investing in sustainable corporate bonds. The yield differences ('greenium') compared to conventional bonds have almost disappeared, meaning investors are getting sustainability 'for free'.

2. Focus on the Nordic market
With around 29 per cent of Nordic issuers, the Aktia Sustainable Corporate Bond Fund (ISIN: LU2459309501)  is twice as high as in the benchmark. According to Sandström, Scandinavian companies offer an attractive risk/return profile, being solidly positioned yet relatively unknown outside the region.

3. Combination of credit and ESG analysis
The team uses a variety of data sources, such as Morningstar and the Finnish analysis firm Upright Project, to evaluate sustainability goals and impact data. Artificial intelligence helps to evaluate millions of pieces of economic data and assess ESG risks more accurately.

4. Europe as a key driver for green bonds
While the US has little influence in the sustainable corporate bond segment, the European market continues to grow strongly. Sandström expects green bonds to continue offering high issuance volumes and attractive diversification opportunities, particularly in Europe.
